While emphasis will vary with the instructor, general topics include Revolutionary and early national periods, the creation and growth of legal institutions, the many different relationships between a developing society and its developing law; in the nineteenth century, the birth of the modern law school, the history of the legal profession, and legal history as a category of the history of ideas. Students may choose a take-home examination or a research paper on a topic to be determined after discussion between instructor and student.
