Economic Regulation & Deregulation (3) (GOV 115)

An introductory course that acquaints the student with the public policies and legal doctrines that have informed decisions to regulate and deregulate various economic activities in the United States.  After guiding students through the study of the general framework for understanding regulatory policies, the course turns to legislation, regulations and cases and scholarly writing relating to particular agencies, such as the Federal Trade Commission, Civil Aeronautics Board, New York Public Service Commission, New Jersey Gaming Commission, and the Conneticut Gaming Commission. The scrutiny of particular agencies and industries encourages student to learn about regulatory and deregulatory programs not only in theory but also in practice. Students, through papers and presentations, are given the opportunity to explore areas of particular interest to them.
