Offers students the opportunity to engage in the direct representation of individuals who have filed employment discrimination suits in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York (S.D.N.Y.) Through the S.D.N.Y. Employment Discrimination Pro Bono Mediation Panel, students will represent pro se litigants for the purpose of mediating their employment discrimination claims. Students may also work on enforcing New York State’s antidiscrimination laws with the New York State Division of Human Rights, which has jurisdiction to receive, investigate, and litigate complaints from members of the public for discriminatory practices in employment, housing, or public accommodations. Students may interview complainants and respondents, gather and review evidence, and assist the Division in determining whether to charge a respondent with violating the State’s antidiscrimination laws. A weekly seminar covers antidiscrimination laws, investigative interviewing, fact investigation and analysis, counseling, and mediation. No more than 14 placement credits may count toward the J.D.
