FAMILY COURT PRACTICE SEMINAR (2) (FAM900) AND WORKSHOP (2) (FAM901)

Combines a seminar with a supervised externship in family court or family law. The seminar will focus on the practice of family law in the family courts of New York. Students will hear from various actors in that court, including law guardians, guardians ad litem, and forensic psychologists and psychiatrists. In addition, students will examine evidentiary, ethical and other issues as they arise in the family court setting and the repre­sentation of parties within the family court system. Workshop participants will be placed with family court judges, practitioners and City agencies involved with family representation. Participants must devote spend at least 112 hours (8 hours/wk.) to their externship, meet with a supervising faculty member, attend the seminar, and produce a paper or other written assignment for the seminar. Selection will follow individual interviews with applicants. A limited number of students who are unable to participate in placement may be admitted to the two-credit seminar without enrolling in the workshop. 2 seminar credits are graded and 2 place­ment credits are pass/fail. Placement credits do not involve scheduled classes. No more than 14 placement credits and 21 credits not involving scheduled classes may count toward the J.D.
