Focuses on immigration law enforcement. Allows students to work with an attorney in the US Attorneys Office for the Eastern District as well as with and attorney in the counsel offices of the three main branches of the Department of Homeland Security, Citizenship and Immigration Service, Immigration Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection. Students will learn about immigration law related crimes and civil prosecutions. They will study evidentiary issues and key jurisdictional doctrine related to this area of criminal and administrative law enforcement. Topics include: immigration law related crimes and prosecution priorities; representing agencies - who is the client?; Freedom of Information Act procedures; burdens of proof in civil and criminal prosecution; preserving issues for judicial review and understanding jurisdiction in immigration matters; ethical dimensions of law enforcement; discretion of the role of the prosecutor. Students spend 168 hours in a supervised externship and also participate in a weekly seminar course.
