This course will provide students with an introduction to the international legal framework governing intellectual property. Even practitioners with a predominantly domestic intellectual property practice need to have a basic understanding of the mechanisms available for extending domestic rights abroad as well as the kinds of variations that can exist among jurisdictions with respect to the scope of intellectual property protection. The course will also examine the problem of enforcing intellectual property rights abroad, providing both an overview of the basic mechanisms available for enforcement as well as an introduction to the considerations relevant to deciding whether and if so how to seek such enforcement. Finally, the course will examine selected policy issues in the area of international intellectual property, such as the enforcement of intellectual property rights in developing countries, access to knowledge and human rights, and the protection of traditional knowledge.
