This seminar explores the constitutional issues raised by elections and voting, It covers several major topics, including the right to vote, voter identification requirements, reapportionment, restrictions on racially discriminatory voting laws, regulation of political parties, First Amendment restrictions on campaign finance laws (including Citizens United), direct democracy, partisan gerrymandering, constitutional restrictions on redistricting, and Bush v. Gore. Students in the course will draft judicial opinions, legal memoranda, and advocacy briefs, and receive intensive feedback on their written work.
