Professor Margaret Butler
This course will
provide an overview of research in international and foreign law.
Students will receive a solid grounding in practical skills and an
understanding of the theoretical questions that must be addressed when
considering an international or foreign legal research question,
particularly encouraging the development of cost and time efficient
strategies. Although the emphasis is on electronic resources, students
will read about, use, and evaluate both print and online resources for
international and foreign law research. Students will also learn about
the structure and documentation of major regional, international, and
supranational organizations, such as the United Nations, the European
Union, and the World Trade Organization. Students will be evaluated based
on legal research assignments requiring the use of both print and online
sources, a brief oral presentation on a foreign legal system, and a
take-home examination that tests their understanding of research tools and
their ability to perform international legal research tasks.
