Investigates marriage as a legal concept. Being married has consequences all over the law, well beyond “domestic relations.” As we will explore, the law of tax, crimes, torts, contracts, property, evidence, bankruptcy, immigration, civil rights, landlord-tenant relations, trusts and estates, employee benefits, and federal jurisdiction, among other subjects, all contain rules that treat people differently on the basis of marriage. By illustrating the role of this status that pervades American law, the study of marriage brings together various aspects of the J.D. curriculum that otherwise appear disparate.
