The Accelerated JD/LLM Program is designed for qualified New York Law
School JD students who would like to pursue a post-JD (Master’s) LLM
degree in one of our specialized graduate programs in Financial
Services Law, Real
Estate Law, and Taxation
Law on an accelerated basis.
The Accelerated
JD/LLM program is just one of the ways that students may complete an LLM
degree at New York Law School. For more information on all of our programs
options please visit: Graduate
Degree Program Options.
Students in the
Accelerated Program complete the JD degree in the typical timeframe, but
include an additional 6 to 7 credits in their JD program of study. Most
students will need to enroll in one summer term during the JD years to
complete the additional credits on time. Following receipt of the JD
degree, students typically take a summer for the bar exam and then return
to NYLS to complete the LLM in a single final semester. Students in the
Accelerated Program pay a reduced tuition rate for the LLM portion of the
degree.
Interested students may apply to one of the Accelerated
JD/LLM programs as part of their application to the law school and at any
point up until the Accelerated Program Application Deadline (March 1 of
the second year for Day students and November 1 of the third year for
Evening students).
Curriculum.
A student in
the Accelerated JD/LLM Program will first complete all required courses for
the JD degree. Students will integrate courses for their specialized LLM
degree into the remainder of their JD curriculum. Students will be
required to meet curricular benchmarks toward their accelerated LLM degree
during the JD years. For the specific requirements for each program, see Program
Requirements and Benchmarks.
Students in
the Accelerated JD/LLM Program will work closely with the Office of
Academic Affairs and the respective Graduate Program Director to schedule
their courses. Once accepted into an Accelerated Program, the student will
be contacted by the Program Director for assistance in planning his or her
course schedule to meet all program benchmarks. Starting in the summer of
the second year for Day students (third year for Evening students), all
course selections will need to be approved by the respective Graduate
Program Director.
Total Credits.
By applying advanced standing credit from the JD program
toward their LLM degree, students reduce the total required credits for
both degrees. Students in the Accelerated JD/LLM Program must complete a
total of 104 (Tax, Financial Services) or 105 (Real Estate)
credits. In order to accelerate, a JD student will need to complete a
total of 92/93 credits by the end of the third year for Day students and
fourth year for Evening students. Most students will need to enroll in at
least one summer term during the JD years to complete these additional
credits on time.
Eligibility.
The Accelerated JD/LLM is available to qualified students who
will receive their JD from New York Law School. Students who earn their JD
degree from another law school are eligible to apply for one of our LLM
degrees in the regular programs, and may take courses for advanced
standing. For more information on our programs for non-NYLS JD students
please visit: Graduate
Degree Program Options.
Admission to Accelerated
JD/LLM.
Students will be able to apply to one of
the Accelerated JD/LLM programs as part of their application to the law
school and at any point up until the Accelerated Program Application
Deadline.
Accelerated Program Application Deadline is March 1 of the second year for Day students and November 1 of the third year for Evening students.
Students are asked to commit to the program by no later
than the end of the spring term of their second year for Day students
(fall of the third year for Evening students).
In order to apply to the
Accelerated JD/LLM Program, current JD students must submit the
standard
LLM application.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Students in all of the Accelerated Programs will pay a flat, add-on tuition solely for the LLM coursework. The add-on tuition for students in the Accelerated Program who begin the post-JD portion of the program in 2012-2013 or 2013-2014 will be:
o Financial Services - $10,500
o Real
Estate - $10,125
o Tax - $9,000
These amounts are equal to approximately 25% of the total full-price LLM tuition charged for the respective LLM degrees. Tuition for the LLM degrees and Accelerated Programs are subject to change from time to time.
Summer credit. Students in the Accelerated JD/LLM Program may choose to enroll in summer courses at New York Law School during the JD years. Students will be charged tuition at the current JD per credit rate for these courses. Tuition paid for summer courses will be credited against the flat-rate tuition charged for the LLM degree up to 50% of the flat add-on LLM rate for the respective program.
The add-on tuition for the LLM degree will be due by the start of the semester following completion of the JD degree (typically the 7th semester for Day students and 9th semester for Evening students) and any credit from the summer JD tuition will be applied at this time.
Financial aid for LLM degree. LLM students may be eligible for Federal Stafford Loans, Federal Graduate PLUS Loans, and/or private loans. For more information, please visit the Financial Aid Resources page.
