About The Graduate Real Estate
Program
The Graduate Real Estate Program provides LL.M.
candidates with a thorough grounding in the law, business, and regulation
of real estate transactions, finance, and development. Through a
comprehensive program of study, students develop a rich understanding of
the financial, business, legal and policy concerns that are an inseparable
part of sophisticated real estate practice. The LL.M.program begins with a
rigorous core curriculum that ensures a comprehensive foundation in real
estate law and business, including deal structuring, economic and
financial analysis, negotiation and drafting skills, and continues with a
broad array of advanced offerings that permit candidates to examine fields
of particular interest in depth
Advance Your
Skills . . . and Your Career
The Real Estate LL.M. program
can advance your legal career at almost any stage -- providing the
training and knowledge new lawyers need to find an exciting first
position or build a successful and rewarding practice, or for experienced
attorneys to expand their expertise and client base, taking
their practices to the next level. The interdisciplinary nature of
the program also makes it ideal for lawyers who are considering branching
out into the business side of the real estate industry.
Concentrations in Transactional Practice; Public
Policy; and Development
LL.M. students may elect one of
three concentrations: Transactional Practice; Public Policy and
Regulation; and Real Estate Development. Each concentrations begin with
the Core Curriculum, but they have differing upper-level requirements
tailored to different career objectives. The Transactional Practice
concentration focuses on structuring, evaluating, negotiating and
documenting a wide range of real estate-related transactions. The Public
Policy and Regulation concentration emphasizes public regulation of land
use and real property development, including administrative law and
procedures, environmental issues, zoning and land use regulation, and
public dispute resolution. The Real Estate Development concentration
integrates finance, construction, land use, and related topics. In
each case, the program emphasizes close interaction with leading figures
in the New York bar, who provide individualized feedback on student
projects. Each program also offers opportunities for placements at private
firms (legal and business) and public offices dealing with real estate
issues.
Individualized Attention and
Support
Students come to the Graduate Real Estate Program
with different levels of preparation and different professional
backgrounds and career goals. In order to enable students to reach those
goals, each is assigned to a faculty advisor who will help him or her
develop an individualized course of study and career plan. The full
resources of the Law School are available to LL.M. candidates, including
the Office of Career Planning, the staff and collections of the Mendik Law
Library, and our state-of-the-art electronic research resources.
The
J.D./LL.M. Program. Students applying to New York Law School,
or those currently enrolled at New York Law School, may apply for a joint
J.D./LL.M. program, which a student may complete in as little as seven
semesters plus a summer. Alternatively, J.D./LL.M. students can take the
full 27-credit LL.M., while receiving a tuition credit for the final eight
credits of the program.
By applying to the joint J.D./LL.M.
program, a student can not only reduce the time and cost of the two
degrees, but can also ensure admission to the LL.M. program* while planning an integrated program of
study from the beginning of his or her law school
career.
Visiting Students. Students may visit at NYLS during their third year of Law School, with permission of their home school, in which case relevant courses taken during that semester may be applied toward both the J.D. and the LL.M., reducing the time and cost of the degree.
* For students who come in through initial acceptance into the JD/LLM program, admission to the LL.M. is contingent on achieving a GPA of at least 2.67 during the first year of law school.
Advanced study in business, law and policy to prepare for the complexities today's real estate and legal markets.
