New York Law School has a presence in the real estate field that few, if
any, other law schools can match. At many schools, real estate (and
commercial law in general) seems almost an afterthought, with the faculty
and curriculum heavily focused on litigation. New York Law School has
demonstrated a commitment to teaching real estate at the highest level, as
evidenced by the extraordinary depth and prominence of the faculty, the
work of the Center for Real Estate Studies (CRES), and the development of
the new LL.M. in Real Estate. This commitment to real estate is supported
by a number of other important resources unique to the Law School,
including the Center for New York City Law, which builds important bridges
to the city’s government and real estate development communities; the
Center on Business Law & Policy; and the School’s advanced tax
curriculum. In addition, the School’s location in the real estate
capital of the world provides students with incredible opportunities for
hands-on experience in the field.
The
Center for Real Estate Studies
The Center for Real Estate Studies (CRES) at New York Law School
provides students with a unique educational opportunity to study both the
private practice and public regulation of real estate. Leveraging the
School’s location in the prime real estate market of New York City,
the Center enables students to gain practical experience in the real
estate community and make contacts for future employment. Launched in
2007, the Center also sponsors conferences, symposia, and continuing legal
education programs on a broad spectrum of issues, including zoning and land
use, environmental law, eminent domain, housing, the secondary mortgage
market, and nontraditional financings. The Center for Real Estate Studies
aims to help bridge the existing gap between the private practice and
academic study of real estate.
The
Center for New York City Law
The Center for New York City Law was founded in 1993 by Professor Ross
Sandler. The academic and public mission of the Center is to provide
information about, and analysis of, the laws and legal processes that
govern New York City. The Center’s ultimate goal is to make the
city’s government and decisions more fair, comprehensible and open
to the public. The Center pursues its mission by scholarly research and
writing and by widely disseminating information about New York City in
accessible and easily understood formats. As a constituent of New York Law
School, the Center draws heavily on the Law School’s faculty, staff,
and students, and on an Advisory Council of governmental and civic
leaders. The Center writes and edits publications; sponsors events,
courses and symposia; develops urban government courses and curricula;
maintains a research-based Web site; and owns a specialized New York City
Charter and government library.
The Center on Business Law & Policy
The Center on Business Law & Policy provides an enriched educational experience in the business, securities, and commercial law areas, preparing students to excel as planners and counselors in general advising, litigation, and especially deal-making situations with business clients. The Center offers a range of programs providing a firm grounding in the fundamentals needed to enter business-oriented law firms, law departments in corporations, investment banks, financial services and brokerage firms, institutional investors, as well as regulators and other commercially oriented governmental offices.
