Special Education Law and Practice
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act has pervasive effects throughout our educational system. In this course, students will examine the history and purposes of the IDEA, the statutory and regulatory framework of special education law, and the administrative hearing process. Topics covered will include: the process for identifying and evaluating students with disabilities, the scope of special education services, preparation of special education plans, and placement issues. The course will also introduce students to topics such as student discipline, traditionally underserved student populations, racial issues in special education identification and services, and current topics in Supreme Court litigation. At the end of the course, students will participate in a mock special education hearing.
