State and Local Government: Past/Current Problems and Issues
This course will examine how corruption and governmental scandals of the 19th and 20th century affected and continue to affect state and local governments’ politics, structure, ethical requirements and decision making. The course will concentrate on the history of New York City. Readings include materials on Boss Tweed, Plunkitt of Tammany Hall, Jimmy Walker, Robert Moses, the fire at the Triangle Shirt Waist factory, police corruption, Edward I. Koch and others. Several short papers will be required during the course. Grades will be based on papers and class participation.
