Law Review Write-On Competition

The Law Review Write-On Competition will be held from July 24 to July 31, 2008.

The Law Review invites all students who do not meet the grade-on selection criteria, and who are not part of the Comprehensive Curriculum Program, to participate in the Annual Write-On Competition. The writing competition requires students to demonstrate their writing and substantive legal analysis skills by drafting a short paper based on a fact pattern that is developed by the Law Review.

Submissions Format

The problem will be available online. All submissions must adhere to a limit of 3,000 words (footnote text counts for purposes of word count).  Anything in excess of that limit will not be read.  In addition, please format your submission as follows:

• Text should be double-spaced in Times New Roman 12-point font.
• All citations must appear in footnotes (not endnotes).  All footnotes should be single-spaced in Times New Roman 10-point font. 
• Margins should measure one inch.
• Print on single sides of paper and staple the pages in the upper left corner.
• A cover page must accompany your paper.  Because the papers will be read anonymously, DO NOT put your name anywhere on the paper itself.  Instead, your submission should be accompanied by a cover page listing your name and contact information, including daytime and evening phone numbers and NYLS address.  Any submission that includes your name on the pages of your paper will be disqualified.
• Please use page numbers.

Citation and Footnote Format

• All citations must conform either to the Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation or to the ALWD Citation Manual.  Copies of both are available on reserve in the NYLS Library.

Research Requirements

This is not intended to be a research project.  Rather, the competition is designed to allow you to demonstrate your writing and analytical skills.  You will be given a fact pattern as well as relevant law and asked to analyze the legal issues.

How to Submit

All papers must be submitted according to one of the following two methods.  Any submissions received after the specified deadlines will not be read.

1.  Hand delivery.  Hand deliver to the Registrar's Office, between 10am-1pm and 2pm-5pm. The Registrar's Office is located on the 2nd floor of the A Building.
2.  Overnight Delivery.  Submissions sent by Overnight Delivery must be postmarked by 5pm on the due date.  If you choose to submit your paper by mail, it must be sent via Overnight Delivery (e.g., via Federal Express, UPS, USPS Express Mail).  The mailing address is:

Selection Process

The Law Review editorial board and its Publisher, Professor Cameron Stracher, will review all submissions and extend membership invitations to those students whose papers exhibit excellent writing and analysis.  All submissions are reviewed anonymously.

Number of Write-On Invitations

There is no limit to the number of students who may write-on.  Invitations are extended based on the merit of the written submission only.  In 2007, the Law Review received approximately 52 write-on submissions and extended invitations to two students.

When Invitations Will Be Extended

If you are selected to join the Law Review, we will contact you no later than one week after submission date by email and/or phone.

Membership Requirements

All students invited to join the Law Review will be required to attend our Orientationas well as training sessions.  In addition, all Law Review members are required to register for Legal Scholarship, a seminar course offered once per week in the Fall semester.
