FAQS

Q: Does New York Law School offer any study abroad programs?

A: Yes. New York Law School offered its first summer study abroad program in Summer 2010. New York Law School is excited to announce the successful continuation of this program during the summer of 2013. Dates for the Summer 2013 Program are: May 20 – June 12, 2013.  The program is a cooperative venture of the Center for International Law, the Center for Financial Services Law, and the Center for Real Estate Law.

Courses offered in the London Summer Study Abroad Program qualify for academic credit and are ABA-accredited*. For additional details, please visit the London Summer Study Abroad Program website: www.nyls.edu/london

All New York Law School students in good academic standing may register for the London Summer Study Abroad Program by completing the application available on the program’s website. Note: The “Summer Abroad Permission Request Form” is not required for the London Summer Study Abroad Program.

Q: Do I need permission from New York Law School to attend a study abroad program other than New York Law School’s London Summer Study Abroad Program?

A: Yes. Students must submit a proposed course schedule complete with descriptions to the Office of Academic Affairs and receive written approval prior to attending a study abroad program approved by the American Bar Association (ABA). Students must be in good academic standing to seek permission to attend a study abroad program.

(submit completed form to Office of Academic Affairs)

Note: Students who attend study abroad programs without receiving prior approval from the Office of Academic Affairs will not receive any credits toward the JD degree.

Q: Where can I get a list of ABA approved study abroad programs?

A: A list of approved programs can be found on the ABA website at: http://www.americanbar.org/groups/legal_education/resources/foreign_study/foreign_summer_winter_programs.html

Q: How many credits can I transfer? Will they be applied towards the eighty-six (86) credits necessary for graduation?

A: It depends on which study abroad program you complete:

For the NYLS London Study Abroad Program: New York Law School will apply the four (4) credits earned in London to the 86 credits needed for graduation. In addition, the grades earned in London will be averaged into students' New York Law School grades to calculate cumulative grade-point averages. However, New York Law students will not receive residence credits for attending this program; therefore, participation in this program may not be used to accelerate New York Law School students' date of graduation.

For all other ABA-Accredited Summer Programs: Provided students receive a grade of “C” or better, New York Law School will transfer up to (16) academic credits earned through a semester abroad program and up to six (6) academic credits earned through a summer abroad program. The credits will be applied towards the eighty-six (86) academic credits necessary for graduation. Students may receive academic credit for only one summer abroad program while at New York Law School.

Note: For all Summer Programs (including the London Summer Study Abroad Program) New York Law School will transfer academic credits earned through a study abroad program for students in the Comprehensive Curriculum Program, however, those credits will not be applied towards the eighty-six (86) academic credits necessary for graduation.

Q: Will the grades I receive during a study abroad program be included in my GPA?

A: It depends on which study abroad program you complete:

For the NYLS London Study Abroad Program: The grades earned by New York Law School students in the London Summer Study Abroad Program will be averaged into students' New York Law School grades to calculate cumulative grade-point averages.

For all other ABA-Accredited Summer Programs: New York Law School will not transfer the grades received for coursework completed during a study abroad program, and will not include such grades in a students’ cumulative GPA.

Q: Will I receive residence credit for a study abroad program?

A: In general, students will receive residence credit for a semester abroad program, however, New York Law School does not generally award residence credit for summer abroad programs because such programs usually do not guarantee the amount of class hours required by the ABA. Therefore, students should not plan to use summer abroad programs to accelerate graduation dates. A complete description of the residency requirements and summer abroad criteria can be found on the ABA website at www.americanbar.org/groups/legal_education/resources/foreign_study.html (Note: This restriction on residence credits for summer programs applies to the London Summer Study Abroad Program as well.)
