Planned Giving at New York Law School
Have you held off selling appreciated assets because taxes will reduce
your gains?
By contributing appreciated property, such as
marketable securities, stock in a closely-held corporation, real estate,
or personal property, to New York Law School you can avoid federal capital
gains taxes and state and local income taxes. You also can generate a
charitable income tax deduction based on the property’s fair market
value for up to 30 percent of your “contribution base” (or
adjusted gross income, not carrying back net operating loss deductions).
Because the Law School is a non-profit organization, we can sell the
assets without reductions by capital gains taxes and state and local
income taxes. In addition, contributing appreciated property trims down
your estate and reduces potential estate taxes upon your
death.
Because you do not recognize any built-in capital gains
or income, contributing appreciated property, like marketable securities,
is tax-effective.

You can donate marketable securities
held in a brokerage account to New York Law School electronically. Simply
fill out our Stock Transfer Form and fax it to our office at
212.791.2150.
Gifts of stock in closely-held
companies, S-Corporation stock, partnership interests, real estate, and
personal property require additional planning, including a qualified
appraisal of assets. Gifts of personal property must also be related to
New York Law School’s philanthropic purposes to generate a
charitable income tax deduction based on fair market value. Gifts of stock
in closely-held companies, S-Corporation stock, partnership interests, real
estate, and personal property require the approval of New York Law
School.
Before you contribute appreciated
property, you should consult your professional advisors. For more
