NYLS Dispute Resolution Team Intramural Negotiation Competition

We invite you to participate in the second annual NYLS Dispute Resolution Team Intramural Negotiation Competition. Last year, the Team began participating in American Bar Association competitions, and hosted our first Negotiation Competition to provide NYLS students a forum to negotiate under time constraints and in an area of law with which they may not be familiar. Students are evaluated on their ability to quickly assess the interests of their client and adversary and showcase effective communication and advocacy skills.

The DRT promotes greater interest among law students in legal negotiation and provides a means for them to practice and improve their negotiating skills with immediate feedback from experienced professionals like you. We need experienced judges for our competition, and we look first to our alumni because we know how much expertise you have developed over the years, and how generous New York Law School’s graduates have been in the past, offering encouragement and support to current students.

The competition will be held on March 19th at New York Law School, 185 West Broadway New York, NY 10013. The competition simulates legal negotiations in which paired teams of law students, acting as lawyers, negotiate a series of legal problems with a common set of facts known by all participants and confidential information known only to the participants representing a particular side. The competition will consist of three rounds. Teams that exhibit exceptional negotiation skill, creative problem solving, and artful advocacy of their clients’ interests during the first two rounds, advance to a final round. We are able to offer up to 2 CLE credits for your participation [1 credit per round judged].

This competition is designed to provide students who are proactively engaging in skill development with an opportunity to benefit from the experience of strong mentors like you. We need your help. We hope that you will want to get involved as a judge. Please send your Judge’s RSVP commitment [next page] by email to Jennifer Murphy (Jennifer.Murphy@law.nyls.edu) or John Scola (John.Scola@law.nyls.edu) by March 5th. With your participation, we will make this year’s Negotiation Competition a success!!

Sincerely,

Jennifer
