The Office of Career Planning supports students interested in public interest law careers through counseling, programs and funding. Career Planning partners with NYLS Centers such as the Justice Action Center, the Diane Abbey Law Center for Children and Families, and the Center for New York City Law to deliver a diverse range of dynamic programs, events and opportunities. We work closely with public interest and affinity student organizations as well, helping them to build vibrant networks and events that develop legal skills and increase awareness of their missions.
The Office of Career Planning oversees the School’s robust Public Interest Summer Funding program, which funds upwards of 200 students working in unpaid public interest internships each summer. These include Public Defender and District Attorney’s Offices, advocacy organizations, nonprofits, and city, state, and federal government agencies. NYLS is walking distance from the City’s governmental and judicial centers, meaning that public interest employers are literally footsteps away.
In addition, our dedicated Public Interest Advisor provides individual counseling and information on summer and academic year externships, pro bono opportunities, community service, and postgraduate fellowships and employment opportunities. We look forward to helping explore these options and plan your career.
