About the Center for International Law
Founded with funding from the Starr Foundation, the Center for
International Law supports teaching and research in a broad range of areas
of international law. The Center derives much of its strength from
interaction with New York City's business, financial, and legal
communities. It also has an advisory
board. The Center:
Is the
publisher of
The
International Review, which is the
only
academic newsletter issued by an ABA-accredited law school that reports on
a broad range of contemporary international and comparative law issues in
plain English. In 2009, the newsletter won the Gold Award
for “Most Improved Editorial (Print Newsletter)” in the Magnum
Opus Awards. In 2007,
The Newsletter on Newsletters awarded
The International Review with its Gold Award for "Best Edited
Organization Newsletter."
Sponsors
conferences and symposia which bring
together business people, legal practitioners, and national and
international public figures to discuss timely topics in international
law. Speakers have included a Secretary-General of the United
Nations, a Nobel laureate, a former Director of Legal Affairs of the
World Trade Organization; a distinguished justice of the Constitutional
Court of South Africa; a former United States Secretary of the Treasury;
and prominent academicians and practioners who have talked
about global migration; the International Criminal Court; the
European Court of Justice; the Appellate Body of the World Trade
Organization; Latin American financing; the Russian securities markets;
the introduction of the Euro; and the compatibility of world trade and the
environment, among other topics.
There are also
some misconceptions concerning the Center for International Law. For
example:
- It does NOT determine
which international law courses the Law School will offer during a
particular academic year. Rather, the Faculty and the Office of Academic
Affairs schedule courses for the Law School. Whether a particular
international law course will even be offered during a certain semester
depends on various factors, including instructor availability and
sufficient course enrollment.
The Director of the Center
is Professor
Lloyd Bonfield. The Emeritus Director is Professor
Sydney M. Cone, III. Faculty affiliated with the Center
include Lung-chu
Chen, Stephen
Ellmann, Molly Land,
Frank
Munger, Rudolph
Peritz, and Sadiq
Reza. The Associate Director is Michael Rhee.
