International Associates Program
Developing Individual Talent with International Ambitions

About the program:

The Center for International Law invites students with a strong interest in international law to apply for membership in its International Associates Program. Developments across the world in various fields such as criminal, environmental, human rights, immigration, securities, and tax laws have direct and indirect implications on legal practice even in the United States. To understand these cross-border developments, the Law School offers a wide variety of courses addressing the business and public dimensions of international law. Membership in the International Associates Program will help students structure their curricula and related activities in one of the most dynamic and evolving areas of law.

International Associates:

  • Will receive guidance in structuring a curriculum that emphasizes their particular interests in international law. This individualized approach will be based on regular one-on-one discussions between students and members of the Law School’s faculty.
  • Must conduct in-depth research in an area of international law through a written capstone project under the supervision of a faculty member.
  • May attend various conferences which bring together business people, legal practitioners, and national and international public figures to discuss timely topics in international law.
  • May have an opportunity (depending on interest and qualifications) to write an article for its award-winning publication The International Review, which is the only newsletter (and NOT law review) published by an ABA-accredited law school that reports on a broad range of contemporary international and comparative law issues -- all in plain English.

How to apply:

The Center for International Law selects a new class of International Associates through a competitive application process which will be coordinated entirely by the Office of Academic Affairs. During the week of March 15, 2010, you will find a "Common Application" for ALL of the Law School's Associates programs on the Portal. Please follow the directions on the Portal. DO NOT submit an application directly to the Center for International Law. The deadline for submitting an application is Wednesday, March 24, 2010.

The application for the Center's Associates Program require the following items only:

  • A statement (not exceeding 300 words) describing your interest in international law or comparative law and why you would like to become an International Associate.
  • A one-page résumé.

The Center for International Law will notify applicants of its decisions in early April 2010.

Eligibility:

  • The International Associates Program is open to all 1L Day Division students, and 1L and 2L Evening Division students only. (Unfortunately, 2L and 3L Day Division students are not eligible to apply to the program.)
  • This program is separate from and not related to the Harlan Scholars Program. If you applied to the Center for International Law through the Harlan program, you do not need to apply again.
