Daniel Finkelstein

Adjunct Professor

Daniel Finkelstein, senior partner of Finkelstein Newman Ferrara LLP, has over fifty years of real estate litigation experience.   Affectionately known as the "Dean of Landlord-Tenant Lawyers," he is a co-author of the critically-acclaimed, three-volume West treatise entitled Landlord and Tenant Practice in New York, and a Co-Executive Editor of Landlord-Tenant Monthly, a monthly law journal published by Treiman Publications.

Currently, he is Adjunct Professor of Law at New York Law School, where he teaches Landlord and Tenant Law.  Prior to joining NYLS, Dan served as Adjunct Associate Professor of Real Estate at New York University, where he was awarded the University’s “Teachers' Excellence Award.”

In the early stages of his career, Dan served as the Senior Real Estate Manager for the Board of Estimate of the City of New York, and Assistant Chief Enforcement Attorney for the Temporary State Housing Rent Commission.  Dan has proudly served on the Board of Directors of the New York County Lawyers' Association (NYCLA), and is a past chair of NYCLA's Civil Court Practice Section.  He serves on various NYCLA committees and has served on the Judiciary Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, which reviews the qualifications of all judicial candidates.

Dan is the recipient of numerous honors, including awards from the New York State Bar Association, the American Bar Endowment, NYCLA, the Civil Court of the City of New York, and Brooklyn Law School.  He was also awarded certificates of merit by Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford for his work with the United States Selective Service System.  Before joining Finkelstein Newman Ferrara LLP, he was a founding member of one of New York City’s largest landlord-tenant law firms, Finkelstein, Borah, Schwartz, Altschuler & Goldstein, P.C.
