The Center on Financial Services Law invites students to become Associates of this new Center. The Center on Financial Services Law will address many of the legal, regulatory and business issues facing the global financial services industry as well as the products traded by, and the transactions engaged in by, the various global financial institutions, including banks, brokerage firms, hedge funds and government-sponsored entities.
To be eligible as an Associate of the Center on Financial Services Law (FSL), the student must submit a resume and a statement of interest in the Center by November 9th to Professor Ronald Filler who will then interview all applicants. Factors to be considered for acceptance include, among other things, one’s law school performance, current or past work experience and one’s personal statement. Students must demonstrate their commitment to taking several courses involving the financial services industry, assisting on special research projects and participating in various CLE programs to be established by this Center. The Center on Financial Services Law will be open to all second, third and fourth year NYLS law students in the Day and Evening Divisions.
For the 2009/2010 academic year, Associates who apply by November 9th will be selected by the end of November 2009. First-year day and second-year evening students may not apply until next Spring. For each subsequent academic year, students will be selected in the March-April period prior to the next academic year from first-year day students and second-year evening students. Second-year day students and third-year evening students may also apply in subsequent years after first speaking with Professor Filler.
Once chosen, assuming the student continues to meet the minimum requirements, they will be eligible to remain as members of the Center on FSL in each of their subsequent years at NYLS. If selected, the student may list his or her role as an Associate of the Center on Financial Services Law on his or her resume.
FSL Center Associates must take a minimum of two courses listed in Group A by the end of their second year (or third year for an evening student) and agree to take a minimum of three additional courses, at least two courses listed in Group B and one or more courses listed in Group C prior to their graduation. FSL Center Associates will meet with Professor Filler who will advise and work with each Associate as to which courses the Associate should consider. Sample course schedules for Associates in the Day Division in their second and third years (these sample course schedules would apply to third and fourth years for Evening Division students) are also attached for your consideration.
FSL Center Associates must also prepare a
substantial research paper (e.g., a Capstone paper) involving some aspect
of global financial services law under the direction of Professor Filler
or his designee. FSL Associates may satisfy this paper requirement, with
the permission of Professor Filler, by preparing a paper required by one
of the courses listed in Groups B and C. The paper must be completed by
the penultimate semester before one’s graduation.
For students who are in the Harlan program, the Center on FSL is an option within the Center of Business Law and Policy. CBLP Associates who wish to concentrate their studies in the area of Financial Services Law must take the courses required for CBLP (e.g., Corporations, Federal Income Tax, Securities Regulation and Accounting for Lawyers). CBLP Associates electing the FSL option may satisfy their third year capstone experience by the completion of a substantial paper involving some aspect of global financial services law under the direction of Professor Filler or his designee. CBLP Associates electing the FSL option must also agree to take a minimum of two additional courses, including at least one course each from Group B and Group C prior to graduation.
In addition, FSL Center Associates, including CBLP Associates electing the FSL option, must agree to assist on one or more CLE programs to be offered by the Center on FSL during their law school career.
