The practice of real estate law has undergone tremendous change in the
past twenty years. Real estate lawyers now work in increasingly varied
transactions, ranging from simple residential house purchases to
sophisticated multi-use commercial development projects financed with
construction loans, long-term ground leases, mortgage-backed securities,
and tax incentives. During this time, real estate has also become a major
source of capital in the private and public financial markets. Successful
real estate lawyers must now work across a range of disciplines and with
other real estate professionals such as title insurers, real estate
brokers, and bankers.
In addition, policy makers, academics,
the press, and others have become keenly aware of the public costs and
social justice issues arising from the intensive development of land
resources. There is now great concern about ensuring environmental
sustainability, creating affordable housing, preserving historical
landmarks, and safeguarding the financial stability of the residential and
commercial mortgage market.
In the face of these challenges the
Center for Real Estate Studies at New York Law School is one of the
leading academic research centers devoted to the study of both the private
practice and public regulation of real estate. The Center sponsors
conferences, symposia, and continuing legal education programs on these
issues and hosts distinguished lawyers and other real estate professionals
speaking on developments in the practice of real estate law.
The Center for Real Estate Studies is a leader in developing innovative
legal education programs, creating partnerships with leading real estate
lawyers in NYC, and better training our students pursuing real estate
careers. The Center helps bridge the existing gap between the private
practice and academic study of real estate, and is one of the premier
places in the country for the study of real estat
