Thanks to everyone who made State of Play VI so successful and so much fun. We had three riotous days of conference proceedings, from Thursday June 18 to Saturday June 20. Our first day, the Graduate Student Symposium day, featured some 30 students and 8 professors discussing the development of virtual worlds research, noting the remarkable quality of the student work in this area, and examining the opportunities for research and careers in this area. It was great fun, and there was the palpable sense of a new guard asserting their role in this field.
The remaining days were the conference proper, with
65-some speakers discussing various legal, governance, technical and other
issues relating to these online spaces, with two simultaneous speaking
tracks, one interactive track, and three video game consoles in constant
operation to ensure that no-one got bored. The program and speaker list
have all the details, and we'll soon be posting photos and videos as a
record.
All in all we hosted around 180 people for three days,
and the feedback has been uniformly wonderful. It was such a pleasure to
have people back to NYLS. A lot of memories were made at this year's
conference, so we've created a State of Play VI account on flickr to post
all of the pictures taken over the weekend. All are welcome to add/share
their own pictures! Make sure to tag the pictures, "sop09" so
they can be enjoyed by all.
Thanks again. Hope to see you at
the next one.
Dan.
