BIG NEWS! Safe Passage Project to Staff the Juvenile Docket before Judge Patricia Rohan.
Beginning in August, Safe Passage Project will be conducting screenings and assisting immigrant youth at the New York Immigration Court. Professor Benson and adjunct professors Bethany Ow, Martin Rothstein, and Susan Henner will be guiding eight third year students as we seek to determine whether they qualify for special immigrant juvenile status or some other immigration law protections. After our screenings, our project will seek to match eligible youth with pro bono representation. We need your participation more than ever.
The Abbey Center has created a fellowship and attorney Gui Stampur will be working with us in the Safe Passage Project particularly on the complex ways that immigration law intersects with family law.
If you are interested in children and willing to volunteer on either the family law or immigration law issues, we need your participation. Write to us at safepassage@nyls.edu.
Save the Date!
On Thursday, September 13, 2012, Safe Passage will host an evening of CLE related to Special Immigrant Juvenile Status. Attendees will be able to watch a mock immigration hearing. Immigration Judge Rohan is expected to attend. We are cosponsoring the event with several of the New York area non-profits that provide services to immigrant youth. This program will be approved for several hours of CLE credit in professional practice for both transitional and non-transitional attorneys. As the program is finalized we will post more details about the content and speakers.

Spring 2012 has been a very active period for the Safe Passage Project. On April 11, 2012 we held a great CLE event and listened to Judge Gabriel C. Videla of the Executive Office for Immigration Review (the immigration court) explain the juvenile docket process and the need for pro bono counsel. We also learned about special immigrant cases and how they are processed in the Westchester family court. Alumna Maria-Alana Recine was one of the presenters. She is an attorney and judge referee in that court. Volunteer attorney Merrill Clark shared his experiences in several family courts. We also honored many of the past student and attorney volunteers.
