The 2012 - 2013 Academic Year


  • March 1, 2013: The Tenth Annual Conference on Adoption Policy: Ten Years Together: A Retrospective and Prospective Look at International and Domestic Adoption, co-hosted by the Center for Adoption Policy.

  • January 11th, 2013: Diane Abbey Law Center Family Law Internship Forum, an opportunity for law students interested in family law to meet and network with agencies and not-for-profit organizations seeking summer interns

  • November 16th, 2012; Freedom of Choice at the End of Life Patients' Rights in a Shifting Legal and Political Landscape Symposium.  This conference addressed a broad range of issues including impediments to honoring those rights, advance planning tools for persons to ensure compliance with their choices and how to enforce them, legislative and decisional developments, surrogate decision-making for patients whose wishes are not known, pain management and palliative care, hospice, aid in dying, ethical dilemmas in decision-making, medical ineffectiveness of treatment (“futility”), concerns of persons with disabilities, the effect of religion on law and policy, and how the media treats these issues.

  • October 30th, 2012; Family Court 50th Anniversary Reception & Panel Discussion. In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Family Court System in New York State, the Abbey Center co-hosted a discussion panel on “The Legal Landmarks in New York Family Courts.” Panelists included Professor Merril Sobie, Hon. Judith Kaye, Hon. Howard Levine, Hon. carol Sherman and Professor Carlin Meyer.
  • October 23rd, 2012; Domestic Violence Project PanelFor Domestic Violence Awareness month, the Abbey Center partnered with several other Centers on the NYLS campus to discuss how domestic violence intersect criminal law. The panel looked at the impact of the mandatory arrest statutes and how the unintended consequences of the law have affected DV victims. Panelists included Judge Henry of IDV in Brooklyn, a Bronx ADA, a defense attorney, and several advocates from the organization Sanctuary for Families.
  • October 19th, 2012; Mental Health and Juvenile Justice Conference Conference highlights included a panel discussion on the changes that have been occurring in NYC system and break-out sessions on various topics from introductions to the mental health continuum, and introductions on the juvenile justice system, as well as trauma treatment, children of incarcerated parents, aging up, and evidence-based treatment. Dr. Tom Grisso gave the key note address on mental health and its overlap with criminal behavior. 
  • October 5th, 2012; Abbey Center Fall Gathering.  The Abbey Center officially welcomed back its associates for another great year with its annual Fall Gathering.

  • December 14, 2012: Getting Beyond the System Fall 2011 Graduation, celebrating the culmination of a semester-long course for youths aging out of the foster care system taught by New York Law School students Jeremiah Rygus (2L and lead teacher) and Robin Axelman (2L and assistant teacher)
  • December 1, 2011: Nuts and Bolts of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), a Master Class and lunch by Elizabeth Rosenbaum, ICWA expert and consultant to practitioners, policy maker and judges on Native American child welfare
  • November 21, 2011: Thank You to New York Seniors, co-hosted by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys, and the and The Harry & Jeannette Weinberg Center for Elder Abuse Prevention
  • November 16, 2011: Women’s Bar Association Fellowship Inaugural Reception and Cocktails, co-hosted by the Women’s Bar Association and welcoming the fellowship’s first annual honoree, Jessica Badt (New York Law School 2L)
