Associates Program

A number of students have asked about the availability of an “Associates” program next year with the Media Center. It will be offered—but the details as to application and registration will not be available for a month or so. (I’m currently sidelined on the disability list.)

If you’re interested in joining the program, however, please email me with your contact information as well as a short statement of your interests. I’ll be in touch with more information. Application for and registration in the program will take place in May, and it will begin in August.

In terms of coverage, Media Associates will work on a variety of tasks. For example, these may involve drafting of white papers and FCC documents for government agencies, public interest groups, and international organizations (such as the Council of Europe). Students naturally will receive full attribution for projects on which they work. Students also are encouraged to participate in the write-on competition for the Media Law & Policy journal.

And subject to interest, there may be a special section of the two-credit Media Law Seminar. This gives students an opportunity to draft and discuss a short academic paper on a breaking issue in media or telecommunications law.

If you are thinking about pursuing the Media Associates program, you should set aside room in your fall course schedule for the introductory course: Regulation of Electronic Media, which is an overview of broadcasting, cable, telecommunications, and the Internet. You also might be interested in one or both of the courses on European media regulation. And at some point in the near future you should consider Administrative Law and Antitrust—building blocks for a career in any form of regulatory practice.
