International Programs

The Media Center is committed to equipping its students to deal with global media law issues - e.g. International satellite broadcasts, copyright status of materials and the Internet.  The Center believes that law study abroad - at a foreign school, not a US summer program - will enhance a student's experience in the media field.

Beginning in Fall 2001, the Center has begun a program of placing students in media-related programs in law schools in other countries including the University of Muenster in Germany and University of Poitiers in France.

Also, in addtion to its ties to the Council of Europe, the Media Center has promoted various types of interchanges among its foreign students as well as faculty.  For example, the law School normally offers at least two courses per year on EU media law taught by European Law Professors - European Regulation and Mass Communications and Telecom, as well as a course of European Intellectual Property.  In return, several NYLS teachers give offerings at foreign law schools, such as Amsterdam, Poitiers, Haifa, and Melbourne.

International Activities

The Center has been involved with European, Asian, and Latin American institutions for more than a decade, as indicated below:

  • The Center offers several courses each year on European Intellectual Property, regulation and the like - taught by leading European academics.
  • The Center is the only U.S. member of the Board of the Council of Europe's media program; it is the U.S. correspondent for the Council of Europe's monthly magazine, IRIS with student articles.
  • Students from Europe, Asia, and Latin America visit New York Law School every year to take specialized courses.
  • Media Center Faculty members teach abroad on a regular basis.
