| Dr. James Bower is a computational neurobiologist by profession and a virtual worlds educational innovator and entrepreneur by avocation. Along with several of his students at the California Institute of Technology, in 1999, Dr. Bower launched Whyville.net as the first virtual world for children and also as the first virtual world focused primarily on learning. Whyville’s over 4.5 million registered users, average age 12, 68% female, spend more than 35 minutes on average on the site per log in, and on average remain as active users for almost a year, making Whyville one of the most engaging of all destinations for kids on the Internet. Whyville's learning-based activities are supported by a wide range of sponsors including public, private, and philanthropic organizations, and the site is increasingly being used by schools to motivate and educate students. | |
