Timothy J. Burke
Associate Professor of History
Professor Burke specializes in modern African and comparative colonial history, and maintains an active interest in studies of material culture and consumerism. Tim is active in the general field of cultural studies and is the author of two books: Lifebuoy Men, Lux Women: Commodification, Consumption and Cleanliness in Modern Zimbabwe (Duke University Press, 1996) and Saturday Morning Fever: Growing Up With Cartoon Culture (St. Martin's Press, 1999). Tim is working on a comparative biography of three Zimbabwean chiefs. He teaches a first-year seminar on popular and public representations of the future, a course on social history of consumption and advertising, and a course on the historical development of the image of Africa.
