Certificate Program

PROGRAMS OF STUDY

The IILP is proud to inaugurate a certificate program that recognizes outstanding students who, upon graduation, have completed a rigorous course of specialized study in one of several IILP-related fields. These certificates serve as testaments to hard work, dedication, and a commitment to a career in technology, privacy, internet, or privacy law. They also show prospective employers that NYLS and IILP graduates are experts in their field and ready to work on Day 1.

In 2015, we will offer certificates to eligible IILP Harlans and Associates in the following fields:

Privacy, Information, and Data Law, or the study of how networks, computer technology, cyberspace, the cloud, and other digital technologies change — or should change — the way we solve legal problems or practice law. And the study of how personal data is transferred and created, used and misused by corporations, the government, and ourselves. This certificate awards students who have completed a rigorous internet and technology law curriculum.

Technology and Intellectual Property Law, or the study of protecting intangible goods, from music, theatre, and television, to brand names and technological inventions. This certificates awards students who have focused considerable time and energy on vanguard issues in trademark, copyright, and patent law.

Legal Technology and Entrepreneurship, or the study of how computer technology has changed the way we practice law and how technologies can be delivered to customers through new business ventures.

These are new programs and the IILP is eager to expand both the Certificate Program and our course offerings. Going forward, new courses and clinics will be added to each program of study. Check back during your law school career for updates.

REQUIREMENTS

In order to be eligible for a particular certificate, Harlans and Associates of IILP must satisfactorily complete the following program of courses. (Note: to graduate as a Harlan, you need to fulfill the Harlan requirements, which are discussed in detail here. The Certificate Program requirements may be filled concurrently for double recognition).

To receive a Certificate, you must complete FOUR (4) of the courses listed in your chosen field.

Once you have completed your course of study but no later than one month prior to Commencement, you must submit an unofficial transcript and cover letter to the IILP Associate Director.

Please note: There is no guarantee that every course listed below will be offered every year. Many courses are offered in alternating years and certain courses may not be offered in a given year for several reasons. Please plan your course of study accordingly.
