Mediating Human Rights in an International Context

February 5 @ 12:50 pm - 1:50 pm

Come learn about the business impacts on human right. This presentation details the work of Professor John Ruggie, who was the UN Secretary General on Business and Human Rights. Professor Peter Phillips and Caroline Rees, the current President of the Shift Project and a former lead advisor to John Ruggie will discuss the Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights adopted by the UN Commission on Human Rights in 2011.

This presentation will also show portions of a case study film involving longstanding conflicts between operators of a hydroelectric power plant in rural Philippines and the communities that were displaced by its construction in the 1950s. The film shows in dramatic detail how mediation was able to initiate constructive dialogue between the company and the community after six decades of distrust and resentmentCo-sponsored by the Justice Action Center and the Center for International Law.

Pizza will be served.
