The Spoken Word poetry event is the culminating event for Teaching Matters writing curriculum, Writing Matters. Writing Matters introduces 5th through 9th grade teachers to powerful new ways to approach writing instruction using 21st Century technology tools. Created by Teaching Matters, Writing Matters offers a private, safe, free eZine space for classrooms to publish and share their work. At our culminating event, 250 students from New York City public schools perform their own original poetry to an audience of their peers and poets, including master guest poet, Kahlil Almustafa. All students perform their work in breakout rooms throughout the morning and finalists take the stage in the afternoon for the final competition.
