New York Law School Gala Honors Notable Alumni at 2014 Gala

Entrepreneurship, Integrity, and Family Legacy Celebrated

New York, NY (November 12, 2014) – New York Law School (NYLS) will honor distinguished alumni with Groundbreaker Awards at its annual gala on November 12, 2014. The recipients are Steven R. Harber ’92, honored for his legal entrepreneurship and innovation; the Held/Fleischner/Koncelik/Quigley/Whelan Family, honored as a true NYLS family legacy; and Meryl Fiedler Lieberman ’81, honored for her integrity and professionalism.

“We are delighted to honor this talented group of New York Law School graduates, who embody so many of the values we promote at the Law School: an enterprising spirit, a sense of community and continuity, and a dedication to upholding the highest principles of the profession. We look forward to presenting them with this year’s Groundbreaker Awards,” said Anthony W. Crowell, Dean and President of New York Law School.

Steven R. Harber ’92 is a pioneer in the legal services industry, having co-founded two of the industry’s leading companies: DiscoverReady LLC, a trailblazer in electronic discovery, and Palisades Advisors, an innovative advisor to litigation support companies. He is now Managing Director of Lean Law Ventures, which invests in companies that offer efficient and cost-saving legal services to corporate legal departments.

After graduating from NYLS, Harber worked as an associate at Anderson & Company, which specialized in reinsurance litigation, a very document-intensive field. In order to compete with larger firms, the firm developed a litigation support software package that automated the scanning, coding, review, and production process. The software and services became so popular that the firm spun out a separate company. Harber’s sales experience made him the logical candidate to sell its services, and from there his career in legal technology was launched. In 2001, Harber co-founded Palisades Advisors, and in 2004, he and Jim Wagner co-founded DiscoverReady. Harber is currently active at NYLS in helping develop student awareness for the wide variety of opportunities available outside of the traditional law firm model.

New York Law School has been a huge part of the history of the Held/Fleischner/ Koncelik/ Quigley/Whelan Family for more than a century. Joseph Whelan started a family dynasty of NYLS-trained lawyers when he attended as a member of the Class of 1906. Ten family members are part of this legacy: Joseph, four of his grandchildren, two of their spouses, and three of their children.

Deborah Koncelik Held ’76 and Michael R. Held ’76 have been together ever since their first meeting as 1Ls, marrying in 1977; working at law, business, real estate, and art; and raising their four children. Jean Koncelik Fleischner ’78 and Benjamin A. Fleischner ’78 met the first week of law school and were married after their second year. Jean built a career in insurance and is now Senior Vice President at Axis Capital. Ben is a partner at White, Fleischner & Fino LLP, representing insurers in coverage litigation. Their son Adam J. Fleischner ’08 graduated magna cum laude from the Evening Division and is now Assistant Vice President at Berkshire Hathaway. Lawrence J. Koncelik Jr. ’79 is a solo practitioner with a focus on trust and estate litigation. Theresa Koncelik Quigley ’82 is General Counsel and Executive Managing Director at Saunders & Associates, a real estate brokerage. Her daughter Helen Quigley ’14 graduated magna cum laude and recently joined Venable LLP as an associate. Her son Rodger Quigley began at NYLS this fall as a Dean’s Scholar, and will graduate in 2017.

Meryl Fiedler Lieberman ’81 is a founding and co-managing partner of Traub Lieberman Straus & Shrewsberry LLP. Since its inception in 1996, she helped grow the firm from four lawyers to nearly 100 lawyers today, with offices in five states and a liaison office in London. Her practice concentrates in environmental and toxic tort coverage litigation; complex insurance coverage disputes; and counseling involving products liability, premises liability, intellectual property and advertising injury, employment liability and discrimination, directors and officers liability, property damage and first-party coverage, general liability, and insurance policy drafting. She has litigated through appeal many major declaratory judgment and rescission actions nationwide.

Always grateful to New York Law School’s Office of Career Planning for its assistance in securing her meaningful employment upon her graduation, Ms. Lieberman has hired more than 10 NYLS students, five of whom are currently partners in the firm.  She also has participated in the law school’s summer internship program for the last six years, hiring several second-year students per year, and is committed to mentoring NYLS students upon their graduation. Ms. Lieberman has been selected to New York Super Lawyers every year since 2007 and was also one of the top 25 lawyers named in Westchester County for many years. She is a sustaining fellow of the American Bar Foundation, a frequent lecturer at national and international conferences, and an author on many topics concerning insurance coverage.

The 2014 NYLS Gala will take place at Three Sixty, located at 10 Desbrosses Street. For more information, visit http://www.nyls.edu/alumni-and-giving/gala/.
