Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg to Deliver New York Law School’s 2013 Commencement Address
 

New York, N.Y. (May 14, 2013) — New York Law School is proud to announce that New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg will address the graduates at our 121st Commencement exercises on Sunday, May 19 at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall at 10 a.m. Mayor Bloomberg will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.

The Law School will graduate 559 candidates for the Juris Doctor (J.D.), 45 candidates for the Master of Laws (LL.M.), and 3 candidates for the Master of Arts (M.A.) in Mental Disability Law.

“We are honored and excited to have Mayor Bloomberg as this year’s commencement speaker. As New York’s law school, it is only fitting that we have one of the greatest mayors of the greatest city in the world as our speaker and honorary degree recipient,” Dean and President Anthony W. Crowell said. “Mayor Bloomberg’s unfailing commitment to the people of this great City and nation and his dedication to providing justice and equality for all is an inspiration to our graduates.”

“New York Law School has been a valuable part of the City’s legal and academic landscape for more than 120 years, said Mayor Bloomberg. “Their graduates are doing some of the most important and cutting-edge legal work in law firms, corporations, government, and judiciary in New York City and beyond. I am delighted to accept the Law School’s invitation and to have the opportunity to address the Class of 2013.”

The President’s Medal of Honor will be awarded to Arthur N. Abbey ’59, a master securities litigator and Chairman of New York Law School’s Board of Trustees. The award is given annually to the Law School’s most outstanding and accomplished alumni and its most generous benefactors, and acknowledges those who have made significant contributions to the history of the Law School by their exemplary professional lives and their generosity.

“Receiving New York Law School’s President’s Medal of Honor from Mayor Bloomberg at the 2013 graduation, and at center stage at Lincoln Center is the honor and distinction of a lifetime," said Mr. Abbey. "What makes me most proud today are the members of the Class of 2013. Their hard work and perseverance entitles them to now join the ranks of graduates of this great institution. I know they will use their NYLS education to achieve great personal success and to make the world a better place."

About the Commencement Speaker
Michael R. Bloomberg is the 108th Mayor of the City of New York. He was first elected in November 2001, two months after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, a time when many believed that crime would return, businesses would flee, and New York might take decades to recover. Instead, through hundreds of innovative new policies and initiatives, Mayor Bloomberg has made New York City safer, stronger, and greener than ever.

About the President’s Medal of Honor Recipient
Arthur N. Abbey ’59 graduated from New York Law School 54 years ago. His legal education at New York Law School enabled him to build a law practice as a litigator and to start his own firm, now known as Abbey Spanier, LLP. He was invited to become a member of the Board of Trustees of the Law School in 1995 and has served as its Chairman for the last 14 years.
