The New York Law School community mourns the passing of E. Donald Shapiro, Dean Emeritus and Joseph Solomon Distinguished Professor of Law at New York Law School.
Born in 1931 in York, Pennsylvania, E. Donald Shapiro graduated summa cum laude from Dickinson College in 1953 and went on to attend Harvard Law School, where he graduated in 1956. A life-long teacher and pioneer in the field of medical law, he taught at leading institutions including Boston University School of Law, the University of Michigan School of Social Work, Harvard Medical School, Hebrew University and New York Law School.
E. Donald Shapiro served as dean of New York Law School from 1973 to 1983, leading the Law School through difficult economic times. He is credited with helping to build the wonderful faculty, ushering in a more modern approach to legal education, and beginning the steps that led to the Law School’s establishment of a campus, including a new academic building, in TriBeCa. His pride and love of New York Law School was felt long after his departure as dean.
The Law School is grateful for his leadership as a dean and professor, for his dedication to his family, and for his many accomplishments. He will be remembered and missed by us all. We extend our condolences to his wife Merle and his children and grandchildren.
