Mission:

Patents and the US Patent Office have played an indispensable role in the economical and technological development of our Nation. The USPO has accomplished this mission by granting pioneers and inventors patents, thereby acknowledging and protecting certain fundamental rights, for their discoveries. Abraham Lincoln once said, patents "added the fuel of interest to the fire of genius." For 200 years, inventors have sought to safeguard their ideas and creations through the US patent system. These patented inventions include Thomas Edison's electric lamp, Alexander Graham Bell's telegraphy, Orville and Wilbur Wright's flying machine, John Deere's steel plow, George Washington Carver's use of legume oils to produce cosmetics and paint, and Edwin Land's Polaroid camera.

The mission of the Patent Subcommittee of the New York Law School Intellectual Property Society is to promote patent appreciation, education, awareness and society membership in a fun and enjoyable atmosphere. The goals of the organization are to:

  • Provide opportunities for students to gain experience and knowledge in the prosecution, review, approval and issuance of patents and their possible subsequent litigation,
  • Promote and facilitate the use of various patent resources and the USPO,
  • Increase awareness and appreciation of patents at NYLS and throughout the legal community,
  • Seek to promote the highest standards of professionalism and ethics in all activities of the patent law profession, and
  • Develop student/professional interactions outside the classroom environment

We hope to integrate the experience, knowledge, and participation of students, faculty, and professionals to provide a diversity of professional and fun learning opportunities and experiences for those with an appreciation and interest in patents. Participation in our society provides students the opportunity to meet other students, faculty and professionals with an interest in patents and the USPO.
