Even in the best of times, personal financial distress is a reality in our market-based economy. The program described here is empowerment based and seeks to assist affected individuals in this time of upheaval. The program aims to give individuals some of the added skills they need to handle their money, their creditors, and their finances now and into the future. Individuals will be provided basic financial management skills and techniques for handling creditors and credit prospectively.
Train the Trainers

This program will be a one- or two-day program in which trainees will receive information on:
This program will be led by Carol O'Rourke, Executive Director; and Erik Shumar, Director of Programs and Finance. Certain other experts may be added to assist in the break-out groups and the practice teaching modules.

1. The psychology of money and debt;
2. Substantive law information (about financial management, credit usage, credit reporting and scoring, debt collection and bankruptcy);
3. Wealth-building information and strategies;
4. Pedagogical and counseling strategies, including opportunities to practice teaching;
All of this information will be available in printed form and will include a teachers' training manual.
The class will be offered in a one- or two-day format.
Participants will be trained with the expectation that, following the training, they will go out into the community and provide residents of the New York City Housing Authority with the debt and money management skills they need, whether on a group or individualized basis. Potential attendees include lawyers, accountants, financial planners, budget planners, teachers, community group leaders, domestic violence and elder care workers, bankers and paralegals.
