FINANCIAL LITERACY EDUCATION CONFERENCE (FLEC)
WAS A SUCCESS!
On Tuesday, June 3, 2003, the inaugural Financial Literacy Education Conference co-sponsored by the Coalition and Fleet was held. The event was a unique opportunity for financial literacy professionals to get together to discuss program development, program funding and program assessment. The goals of the conference were truly met. More than 200 attendees gathered for a day of workshops, lectures, and plenary sessions on financial literacy education. Conference attendees included community organizations, grass roots consumer advocacy groups, academic and financial institutions, foundations and state and federal government agencies. Topics addressed included strategies for developing an effective financial literacy program, adult pedagogy, lessons from existing programs, program assessment strategies and methods for dealing with predatory lending.
The conference organizers are planning additional post-conference events so that the interest, energy and enthusiasm generated by the event are not lost. These events include a report of the conference (which will be issued free of charge to all attendees), round-table discussions to determine future strategies and development of a best practices guide.
