Center Projects
Minority Media Law Day
Co-sponsored with the Foundation for Minority Interests in Media, this is an all-day program, presented annually by the Center to assist students in preparing for law school. The event supplies information on applying for admission and securing financial assistance; it permits participation in a sample law class; and panelists explore career possibilities and student experiences.
European Audiovisual Observatory
The Center has entered into a partnership with the European Audiovisual Observatory of the Council of Europe. The Center provides a service desk and on-line data base for European academics and officials seeking information on U.S. media law; it also contributes to the Observatory’s publications, and will sponsor joint conferences in Europe and the U.S. The Center’s activities are underwritten by a grant from Minet Global Media Services.
This weekly national PBS television series on affiliate WNYE (TV) Channel 25 has been hosted since the early 1980s by Jacob Trobe, who recently was joined by co-host James Goodale, a prominent First Amendment lawyer. The show features interviews with leading national and international communications and telecommunications figures. It is made available via satellite to the entire public broadcasting system.
Minority Media Law Fellowships
New York Law School places minority students in media companies as interns during their second and third years. The companies pay a salary sufficient to cover the students’ living expenses, while the Law School provides appropriate scholarships. The program is administered in conjunction with the Foundation for Minority Interests in Media.
Media Law Project
This decade-old, student-run organization is one of the most popular activities on the NYLS campus. The Project holds seminars and conferences, has created its own Web site, and publishes a media law magazine, Media Law and Policy, which is distributed nationally.
