A History of the New York City Law Department Symposium will present a history of the Law Department through the commentary and reflection of a notable panel that includes former New York City Mayor Ed Koch, author William E. Nelson, as well as current and former Law Department Corporation Counsels. Using Nelson's recently published book, Fighting for the City, as a platform for the discussion, the panelists will speak on the evolution of the Law Department, the tension between politics and professionalism, the challenges that faced each Corporation Counsel's tenure, and the various roles played by the Law Department.   Nelson's new book argues that when the city has struggled to enhance its competitive position, professionalism has been in control. In contrast, when New York has enjoyed economic dominance, especially during the nineteenth century, politics and attendant corruption have tended to take over.
