Eligibility

New York Law School students, faculty, and staff are eligible to use the services of Pace University Health Care.

What to expect when you come to the UHCU

In order to evaluate your health care concerns during your visit: we will need to know your health h including what medications you take on a regular basis, any ongoing medical conditions or allergies, and a description of what concerns you have at the time of your visit.

After getting such information, we will examine you, perform necessary lab tests, and discuss our findings with you. If you need medication for your problem, we can prescribe it.

Please understand that for reasons of professional liability we cannot prescribe medications or order lab tests without first examining you. For your convenience, we can usually honor requests for lab tests ordered by other health care providers.

Staffing

The UHCU is staffed by certified nurse practitioners who are qualified to:

• diagnose and treat acute illnesses
• help manage many chronic illnesses
• prescribe and dispense medications when necessary
• offer clients continuing and comprehensive health care: including complete physicals family planning visits, nutrition, physical fitness, and stress management programs.

Consulting physicians come to the UHCU on a regular basis to see clients as needed. We also have a large referral listing of local physicians and specialists.

Why do we ask so many questions?

We believe that you can do the best job of keeping yourself healthy practitioners at UHCU provide holistic health care; we consider not only your present complaint, but any factor that can possibly contribute to your illness and health. Such factors include stress, your current life situation, nutrition. sleep, exercise, and other personal habits.

We would like to help you attain your best health potential by finding out about you as a whole person. However, if you feel uncomfortable about discussing anything, please let your nurse practitioner know. Remember, all information you provide is strictly confidential.

Confidentiality

As with any health practice, we maintain a strict code of confidentiality for our clients. This means that no one but you and the UHCU providers have access to your records without your written consent. We cannot discuss your health status with your parents or anyone else unless you have given us prior permission.

Appointments

Office visits are by appointment and may be made by phone or in person. We prefer that you schedule your appointment ahead of time, but we try our best to accommodate walk-ins. Problems requiring immediate attention will be given priority. If you find that you want to continue to see the same nurse practitioner you have seen before, we will certainly try to honor your request.

When to use the UHCU

Here are some examples of the kinds of problems that the UHCU can help you with, and also cases where it would be better to see a physician or go to the emergency room:

• colds, sore throats, ear infections, sinus problems, bronchitis, skin problems, urinary infections
• Pap smears, pregnancy tests, family planning. prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases for men and women, complete physical to meet requirements for nursing, student teaching, employment: athletics, etc.

Immunizations

• small wounds, burns, tetanus shots, removal of stitches
• when you are just not feeling well 

When outside help is needed...

• large wounds requiring stitches
• significant injuries such as bone fractures, or injuries from a motor vehicle accident
serious complicated medical conditions such as meningitis, cancer, and illnesses requiring the services of a medical specialist
• dental problems

We provide personalized health management programs in the areas of stress management, nutrition, and physical fitness.

If you have questions as to whether or not the UHCU can handle your concern, please call and talk with one of our nurse practitioners who can either make an appointment for you at the UHCU, or direct you to the appropriate health care provider.

Fees

There are fees for all services and these must be paid at the tine of service delivery. University Health Care will provide you with a receipt, which you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

What is a nurse practitioner?

A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse who has received specialized training (usually
at the masters eve]) in diagnosing and treating illnesses and providing health care maintenance.

Many are family nurse practitioners, while others specialize in areas including:

• acute care
• counseling
• adult health
• family health
• geriatric / elder health
• pediatric / child health
• psychiatric / mental health
• school / college health
• women’s / obstetric-gynecologic health

What are NPs qualified to do?

As health care providers, NPs are trained and qualified to:

• obtain health histories and perform physical exams
• diagnose and treat common illnesses and injuries
• recognize complicated medical conditions that require referral
• manage chronic medical conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure
• order and interpret diagnostic tests, including laboratory tests and x-rays
• prescribe medications and other treatments
• give advice on hew to prevent disease
• give vaccinations
• refer to community resources arid agencies 

Why choose an NP?

NPs will take the time to assess how your lifestyle affects your health. NPs work with their patients to prevent illness and promote healthy lifestyle choices. They concentrate on early detection of illness and emphasize disease prevention by providing education for patients.
