Health Insurance

As you know health insurance costs are high and anyone considering purchasing health insurance needs to understand the tradeoffs that must be evaluated.  In considering the option that is best for your situation, you should consider the following questions:

  • Am I generally in good health and would need coverage only in the case of serious illness or injury?
  • Do I need care for frequent or chronic conditions?

If you would answer yes to the first question, you might opt for a plan with a high deductible, in order to try to keep the premium low while still being protected for catastrophic medical costs.  If you would answer yes to the second question, you might want a plan with a lower deductible, and perhaps a higher co-payment with a somewhat lower premium.  However, keep in mind that the second scenario will generally involve a higher premium because it will assume a higher usage.

There are no "inexpensive" health insurance plans.  You must make a decision about the relative costs and risks you are able to manage. The best option is often a student's parent's health plan.  In most cases, plans will cover a student until the end of the year in which they become 23.  The student can then enroll in COBRA, which is a continuation of the parent's plan, but as a separate policy and cost.

Although the School does not sponsor a particular plan, listed below are some options that are available directly to students.  Pamphlets and brochures describing these plans can be obtained in the Office of Student Life.
