NEW YORK, NY, October 6, 2003- New York Law School will host a reception on Tuesday, October 7 at 6:30 p.m. in the Wellington Conference Center to celebrate the opening of the "Faces of Liberty" exhibit, a traveling photo journal display that tells the stories of some of the people represented by the New York Civil Liberties Union over the past three decades.
The reception will include remarks from Chris Dunn, Associate Legal Director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, and Richard A. Matasar, dean and president of New York Law School. Snacks and refreshments will be served and the public is welcome.
An educational project of the NYCLU and the NYCLU's Nassau Chapter, "Faces of Liberty" features black-and-white photos with accompanying text that puts human faces on complex civil liberties issues by documenting the challenges for ordinary men, women, and students who faced unpopularity and adversity to stand up for their beliefs. These stories include high school students denied the right to read library books, gays denied a parade permit because they were "non-traditional," black male college students subject to a wholesale sweep in search of a suspect, and women denied the right to join a public organization.
The "Faces of Liberty" exhibit will be on display in the Law School's Shepard and Ruth K. Broad Student Center throughout the month of October and is open to the public.
