Virus Protection Polices

All email is scanned for viruses prior to being delivered to your inbox.  Any email that is found to be infected with a virus is deleted and a notification is sent to the sender.  Additionally, all NYLS computers are equipped with desktop anti-virus software that provides another level of protection from virus infection.  If you suspect you have received an email containing a virus, do not open it, and immediately delete it.

SPAM Policies

The law school has policies in place to reduce the amount of unsolicted email commonly know as SPAM.  In addition to these policies New York Law School uses an Anti-SPAM utility called Postini.

This service checks all incoming NYLS messages for common SPAM indicators and quarantines any suspicious messages.  It will also quarantine any viruses found.  This anti-virus service provides a fourth layer to NYLS virus protection (desktop, server, NYLS gateway and now external perimeter of incoming mail).

You will receive a welcome message from the NYLS Helpdesk with your Postini username and initial password.  Follow the link provided and change your password to something you will remember.  You will then be able to review your Junk Mail settings to determine how stringent you would like Postini to be in blocking different types of messages (i.e., Get Rich Quick Schemes can have a less aggressive level of blocking, while Sexually Explicit messages can have a highly aggressive level).  You can also identify blacklists of your own choosing to block messages from certain addresses, or indicate addresses that should always be let through (a ‘whitelist’).  These settings are individualized so that you can make your own determination as to what is junk mail and what is not.

Each day a SPAM message is quarantined by Postini, you will receive one message in your inbox with a link to log in and determine for yourself if a message should be delivered or deleted.  You are encouraged to check these messages periodically to make sure that valid messages are not being blocked.  You will also see blocked virus messages in your message center.  If you wish, you can safely open these messages and view the text, but you should find you have no need to do so.  Simply delete all virus messages that appear.

You may find that messages from listservs to which you belong are getting blocked.  If this occurs, simply indicate it should be delivered and Postini will prompt you to add this sender to your ‘whitelist’ so that messages will be delivered in the future.

We hope you’ll find this service useful. If you have any questions or problems with this service, please call the OIT Central Help Desk at x2316 (on campus) or (866) 306-2769 (off campus).
