Every student at New York Law School is provided an email account.  You are required to use your NYLS email account for all school-related messaging.  NYLS uses the Microsoft Exchange email messaging system, and students manage email through Outlook Web Access (OWA).

OWA includes much of the same functionality as the full Outlook desktop application, but does not include every option in order to speed the response of the web tool.  You are able send, forward and receive email messages, file messages, create distribution lists, maintain contact information and post vacation messages.  In addition, you can use spellcheck, create an email signature, maintain your calendar and send invitations to others for calendared activities.

Mailbox Size

There is a maximum mailbox size of 50MB. This will allow for the storage of about 12,500 messages without attachments or 167 messages with large attachments.  You are responsible for managing your mailbox to ensure you do not exceed the maximum.  You will not be able to receive any new email if you exceed the maximum mailbox size.

Your email messages remain on the Exchange server until you delete them.  You can choose to leave an email message in your main Inbox, or you can move it into a custom folder.  Email messages are only deleted when you delete them from the Deleted Items folder.

Logging On

When you visit the OWA login page you are prompted for your username and password.

  • Your username is first initial and last name followed by your entering class year  eg. John Smith starting in 2007 would be jsmith07
  • Your default initial password is 'st' followed by the last 4 digits of your SSN and @nyls  (example st6789@nyls)
  • You will be prompted for a new password every 60 days. New passwords should be complex. Minimally, they should have 8 characters including:
    • 1 special character (eg. @, !, $, etc.)
    • 1 upper case letter  (eg. A, N, X)
    • 1 numeric  (eg. 3, 1, 9)
  • A password cannot be repeated for 5 expiration cycles
  • Your username and password is the same for email, network, and intranet access.

IMPORTANT! Be sure to logoff and close all browsers when you are finished.

Email Forwarding Policy

School policy does not allow forwarding of NYLS email to external mail accounts.  You are required to utilize your NYLS email account to read all your mail.  With OWA you are able to access and manage your email from any Internet connection.   Similarily, we do not allow POP or IMAP usage.  All NYLS related mail must be communicated via a valid NYLS email account.
