General

As NYLS students you will need to log into the School’s Network. NYLS has computers available for use in student labs and at kiosks throughout the school. The student labs are located in:

Student Lounge in the lower level of the "C" building (Lab L3, Lab L6)

            Library 7th floor 40 Worth – 714, 715, 716 and 14th floor Room 1402

Kiosks are located by the main entrance of the school and the 7th floor 40 Worth Library entrance.

To access the network you need a network username and password. Usernames for continuing students are unchanged from the prior academic year. For most new students, the network username will be the first initial followed by last name and 07 (your entering year) with no spaces in between. Default network passwords for all students are ‘st’ plus the last four digits of the social security number (if provided) plus @nyls. If you have a problem logging in, please call the Central Helpdesk at x2316 (on campus), or toll free (866) 306-2769 (off campus).Your password will expire every ninety days; you will be prompted to change it approximately 14 days prior to the expiration date when you log onto the network on campus, or when you access OWA email. Passwords must be at least 6 characters long, containing at least on capital letter, one number and a special character.

Logging Into the Network

Once you are at a workstation, you will see a dialog box that says press Ctrl+Alt+Del to login.  A "login box" will appear. Enter your network username, tab to the password field, enter your network password, then click OK. Example:

 Username:        jsmith07

Password:         st1234@nyls

You are now logged into the NYLS network.

C:\ DRIVE

Students are not permitted to save to the C:\ Drive on any Lab or Kiosk workstation. Lab and Kiosk Workstations are periodically updated. Any data stored on these workstations is deleted. Students have access to a secure network drive (U:\) where you can save documents and other items.

U:\ DRIVE

The school has allocated secure network storage space for each student on the U: drive.   This drive is accessible via all NYLS networked computers. Space is limited to 50 Megabytes so you must manage it wisely.   Saved files, pictures etc. consume this space. DO NOT SAVE FILES ON THE C:\ DRIVE of any lab/kiosk computer.

Logging Out of the Network

IMPORTANT!
When finished with your session YOU MUST LOGOUT! Failure to logout of a workstation gives others full access to all of your U:\ drive files.
To Logout, press Ctrl+Alt+Del and choose Logout. Make sure you are logged out before leaving the computer. DO NOT exit windows. DO NOT turn off the computer.

Applications

Logging into the NYLS network will give you access to many applications including:

Adobe Acrobat Reader CALI Internet  Explorer
MS Word 2003 MS Excel 2003 MS Power Point 2003
NYLS Intranet WordPerfect Outlook Web Access OWA
Lexis-Nexis WestLaw

Students are not allowed to install software on NYLS computers. If you use a word processing application in a version other than the School standard, you must convert your document(s) in order to use a school computer. Most software versions can be checked by opening the application, going to the menu bar and clicking Help/About. A new window will display the application name and version.

Kiosk Use

Kiosks are available to access the Internet (and NYLS Intranet) and e-mail. You may access the Internet by double-clicking the Internet Explorer icon. You may access your e-mail by going to the NYLS Homepage at old.nyls.edu and clicking on ‘Email Login’. When finished, be sure to logout. Do not attempt to download from the internet.

HAVING TROUBLE?

In the event you cannot login or need to report a problem with a workstation please call the Central Helpdesk at ext. 2316 (on campus), or toll free (866) 306-2769 (off campus). The on-site help desk is located by the student lounge in the lower level of building “C”.
