NEW YORK, October 8, 2004–Key decisions and actions by New York City’s various land use agencies will be reported each month in a new publication, CityLand, published by the Center for New York City Law at New York Law School.
Launching October 15, CityLand is an indispensable source of information for developers, contractors, architects, lawyers, neighborhood associations, and concerned citizens, providing a powerful new tool for greater public understanding of the city’s land use decisions. Published on the 15th of the month, each issue will cover the prior month’s activity by the major land use agencies of New York City, including the City Planning Commission, Board of Standards and Appeals, Landmarks Preservation Commission, New York City Council, and the Department of Buildings.
Ross Sandler, director of the Center for New York City Law, explains, “The purpose of the newsletter is to keep the public as well as those working in the land use area informed about land use decisions and allow them to participate in the land use process. Land use decisions have historically been difficult to locate, hard to keep up with, and the private preserve of a few lawyers and other specialists. CityLand will help close that information gap by collecting land use decisions into a comprehensive and easy-to-read monthly publication.”
CityLand features detailed maps, photographs, and comprehensive charts, reporting decisions on projects both small and large. Decisions and issues will be followed, annotated and explained. Subscribers will learn what concerns have been raised by the city and the public on a myriad of projects, and read feature stories on everything from small proposed developments to comprehensive rezonings which highlight the city’s vision of its future.
Charts list every project currently underway in the city, including newly filed applications and certification. Complementing CityLand, the Center will make available at no cost on its Web site (www.citylaw.org) each agency’s decisions in a searchable format. The Web site currently contains 20,000 decisions from fifteen city agencies, including all four of the land use agencies covered by CityLand, and new decisions are added daily.
