FOREIGN ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS

New York Law School welcomes applications for admission from qualified candidates with foreign academic credentials.  Information on applying for admission to the J.D. program may be found below.  If you have earned a law degree in another country and are licensed there, you may wish to consider the Foreign Lawyer Program .

Admission to the J.D. degree is only to begin in the fall semester (August) unless you are currently enrolled in the J.D. degree program at an ABA-approved law school and are seeking transfer admission.  The deadline to apply for admission is April 1.

New York Law School requires that your foreign transcripts be submitted through the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) JD Credential Assembly Service. If you completed any postsecondary work outside the United States, including its territories, or Canada, you must use this service for the evaluation of your foreign transcripts. The one exception to this is if you completed the foreign work through a study abroad, consortium, or exchange program sponsored by a U.S. or Canadian instituition, and the work is clearly indicated as such on the home campus transcript. This service is included in the LSDAS subscription fee. A Foreign Credential Evaluation will be completed by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO), which will be incorporated into your LSDAS report. If you are choosing to provide a score from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), you must contact the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and request that they send your TOEFL score to LSAC. LSAC’s TOEFL code for the JD Credential Assembly Service is 0058. Your score will be included in your LSDAS law school report. To use the JD Credential Assembly Service, log in to your online account and follow the instructions for registering for the service. Be sure to print out a Transcript Request Form for each institution and send it promptly to them. More time is usually required to receive foreign transcripts.

Candidates whose first university degree was earned outside of the U.S. or Canada must follow these application requirements:
  • Completed application for J.D. admission with $65 (US) application fee
  • A current subscription to the Law School Admission Council JD Credential Assembly Service (see below)
  • A personal statement outlining your interest in pursuing law study in the United States and at New York Law School
  • At least one, but not more than three, letters of recommendation
  • A current resume or curriculum vitae.
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is not required but is strongly recommended if your LSAT score is below the mid-range due to language ability.    The LSAT is not waived for foreign students.
Applicants who are not U.S. citizens, resident aliens, or currently in the U.S. on a visa that will permit study for the duration of the degree program will need to obtain a student visa. This process is initiated after notification of admission and submission of the tuition deposit. We will refund the deposit if, for any reason, you are denied a student visa on the basis of the form I-20 issued by New York Law School.

I live in Brooklyn, but went to college in Manhattan and have been commuting here on a daily basis since I completed high school. The school’s location is perfect for me. When I came to an open house for admitted students, I just liked the environment. More
